About this Event
On 3 January 2026, the United States carried out a military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. This panel convenes leading specialists from diverse disciplines to examine the far‑reaching consequences of the intervention - its impact on Venezuela’s internal dynamics, its possible effects across Latin America, its significance for U.S. foreign and domestic policy more generally, and its implications for the international order.

Dr Pablo Ribeiro Uchoa (Chair) completed his PhD in Political Science at the UCL Institute of the Americas. His research analyses civil-military relations in Venezuela and shifts in the armed forces during chavismo. He was a visiting scholar at the John Kluge Center for Scholars at the Library of Congress in Washington-DC, and also a BBC World Service correspondent in that city.
Dr Annette Idler is Associate Professor in Global Security, Blavatnik School of Government, and Founding Director of the Global Security Programme at Oxford’s Pembroke College. From 2019 to 2021, Dr Idler was Visiting Scholar at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University.
Dr Grace Livingstone is an affiliated lecturer at the Centre of Latin American Studies, University of Cambridge. She is also a journalist and has reported for the BBC, The Guardian, The Observer and The Independent on Sunday.
Dr Christopher Sabatini is senior fellow for Latin America at Chatham House, and was formerly a lecturer at London School of Economics School of Public Policy and at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University.
Dr Jonathan Monten is an Associate Professor in Political Science and Director of the International Public Policy Programme at UCL Political Science. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of international relations, international security, and U.S. foreign policy.
