About this Event

Join the San Mateo County's Department of Sustainability's Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) for a rewarding community service event as we work together to remove the invasive cotoneaster from Stulsaft Park! Rooting Out Risk- Cotoneaster Removal is a YCA Community Impact Project. Cotoneaster is an invasive plant species that grows across California and is currently growing in Stulsaft Park, Redwood City. By removing cotoneaster, we can reduce wildfire risk and restore natural habitats. Through collaboration with community members, this project will increase awareness about wildfires and invasive species, in addition to directly combating these issues through a hands-on habitat restoration.

In addition, participants will be led on an informative nature walk detailing wildflowers in Stulsaft Park. Education is a priority, and we must mobilize our own communities to make lasting impacts that protect us from wildfires and climate change. After participating in both elements of Rooting Out Risk - Cotoneaster Removal for Wildfire Resistance, participants will have learned more about biodiversity, wildfires, wildflowers, and cotoneaster.

Visit Grassroots Ecology’s Stulsaft Park page to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. Youth under 18 must have their legal guardian approve the waiver on their behalf. Volunteers age 12 and under require an accompanying adult.

Meeting Space: Meet by the native plant and animal mural/storage unit at the lower entrance to Stulsaft Park. The work area will be less than a ten-minute walk from the meeting spot.

There are multi-user gendered restrooms, about an eight-minute walk from the meeting spot. There are single-user gendered bathrooms by the Farm Hill Entrance/playground, about an eight-minute walk from our work area. Multiple drinking fountains are available. There is cell service in some areas of the park. Volunteers may encounter off-leash dogs while we work. Please do not bring dogs/animals to this community event.

Prepare for Exploring Outdoors:

  • Reusable water bottle, filled
  • Snacks, if desired
  • Long pants, long sleeves recommended
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes
  • Rain gear/boots
  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable
  • Plan for potential exposure to the sun, poison oak, and limited cell service.

We will provide gloves, tools, and snacks.

Transportation for Stulsaft Park: The lower entrance to Stulsaft Park is mainly accessible via car and bike, but the 278 samTrans bus goes to the Farm Hill entrance of Stulsaft Park. If taking the bus, get off at Farm Hill & Glennan Dr. stop and then walk through the park to get to the lower entrance meeting space.
If driving and parking please give yourself ten minutes to park and walk to the meeting spot. There is street parking for cars near Goodwin Ave. and Mitchell Way (there is no parking on Recreation Way).
