About this Event
Is Chester Britain's most Roman city? Come along and find out what survives, and how it has shaped the medieval and modern Chester we know today.
Join Peter Carrington, Chair of the Chester Archaeological Society, on this expert-led walking tour taking in the major remains of Roman Deva — and uncovering what they can tell us that isn't always obvious.
Starting at the Northgate, the route takes in sections of the north and east City Walls, the amphitheatre and the Roman Gardens, before returning through Bridge Street and Watergate Street to consider how the vanished western side of the Roman fortress can still be traced in the streets we walk today. The tour concludes in Town Hall Square, reflecting on the massive Headquarters Building and the luxurious Commander's Residence that once flanked Northgate Street.
Packed with insight and plenty of opportunity to ask questions — this is Roman Chester as you've never quite seen it before.
