About this Event
As an example of resilience, Kurdish cinema is hard to beat; a stateless people using cinema as a way of preserving their languages, traditions and identity in the face of enduring hostility across nations and across the world. The result is some of the most imaginative and moving films ever made, unlike anything produced in Western Europe, and this is why Sanctuary Cinema Club in collaboration with the London Kurdish Film Festival is pleased to present this day showcasing some of the best of contemporary Kurdish film.
The evening session begins with a short discussion about Kurdish film between Dr Maryam Ghorbankarimi, Lecturer in Film at Lancaster University, and Shler Murdochy, co-Director of the London Kurdish Film Festival. This will be followed by the short film “Son”, directed by Saman Hosseinpuor. Set in a remote village in the mountains of Iranian Kurdistan, a lonely old mother is waiting for her son to return from military service. This is followed by “A Happy Day” - Three teenage friends, all asylum seekers, stuck in a frozen, hopeless place come up with a plan to escape over the mountain to a world where their dreams can be fulfilled. Then love comes along. A poignant portrayal of hope and despair, directed by Hisham Zaman.
