Opening Reception: Sunday, Feb 23, 2-4pm1515 West 7th ave.
‘Spiritual Journey’ features a selection of works by Vancouver-based Tsimshian artist, Roger Gray. Ranging from cedar carvings to limited edition prints and jewelry, the exhibition highlights stories of faith, family, identity, and resilience —central themes in Gray’s evolution as an Indigenous artist.
About the Artist:
Roger Gray was born in 1969 in Prince Rupert, B.C. and raised in Port Simpson, B.C. He is of the Tsimshian Ginadoiks Tribe, belonging to the Lax Kw'alaams native band.
Roger first learned to carve with his cousin, Henry Green, and later with his cousin, Mike Epp who taught him how to carve masks in the traditional way. Roger attended Fraser Valley College in 1987, and learned about printmaking, wood-block printing, and etching. Between 1988 and 1989, Roger completed courses in teaching art and theatre at the University of Victoria. One year later, in 1990, he apprenticed with Henry Green by working on a 10-foot totem pole in Vancouver. Roger has continued to grow as an artist over the years and strives for excellence in all of his creations. He is now focusing on carving in cedar and making gold and silver jewelry.
