SFJAZZ Collective trumpeter Mike Rodriguez and his brother, pianist Robert, bring their GRAMMY-nominated mix of Afro-Cuban rhythms and modern jazz to this special night in the Joe Henderson Lab. A GRAMMY-winning trumpeter and composer hailing from Queens, New York, Mike Rodriguez was inspired to pursue music by his father, drummer Roberto Rodriguez, and came up through the music programs at the University of Miami and the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at the New School in Manhattan. He’s worked alongside a stunning list of greats including Joe Lovano, Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, and Chico O’Farrill, and has had lengthy associations with Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Chick Corea, with whom he won a GRAMMY as part of his Spanish Heart Band.
Playing classical recitals by age 12, Robert Rodriguez made a name for himself at 22 as pianist in Arturo Sandoval’s touring band and has worked widely with Ray Barretto, Roy Haynes, David Sánchez, Paquito D’Rivera, and Christian McBride. In addition to his work as a jazz artist, he’s an active film composer and educator, having taught at Berklee in Boston with Terence Blanchard before moving west.
The brothers have recorded four albums since they began their musical partnership in 2002, including the 2015 Criss Cross release Impromptu, which received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album.
