Though known mainly for playing the tenor sax, I have always had an affinity for the baritone saxophone. One of the first jazz records I connected with was my older brother’s Gerry Mulligan/Paul Desmond LP, "Two of Mind". Subsequently I developed a comfort level for the big sax ( as well as the chordless jazz group ).
Over the years I played big band and RnB gigs on baritone, including 12 years with Huey Lewis and the News. So it was a privilege to perform with Ron Vincent’s Gerry Mulligan project when the long-time Mulligan drummer put together a West Coast band. I also have a musical relationship with drummer Ron Marabuto, who performed extensively with another towering figure of jazz baritone sax, Pepper Adams.
This quartet will present music which became associated with the baritone sax, including compositions by Mingus, Monk, and Ellington/Strayhorn.
