Rivers of Hope: River Rights Workshop
“A river is more than an amenity, it is a treasure.”
Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes
About the workshop
What might become possible if rivers had rights, such as the right to be free from pollution? Instead of simply reacting to harm after it occurs, could we begin to create systems that genuinely protect and regenerate these vital ecosystems?
This two-hour community workshop will be led by Josh Levene, a prominent advocate for Rights of Nature and co-ordinator of the River Rights Network. As Director of Love Our Ouse, Josh helped develop the first Charter of Rights for a UK river to be formally recognised and supported by a local council.
Communities across the country are now exploring Rights of Nature approaches for their rivers and waterways. This practical and thought-provoking workshop is designed to bring together people from Northamptonshire and beyond to:
• Explore the concept of Rights for Rivers and its local relevance to the River Nene and other waterways
• Showcase practical approaches including Charters of Rights, Nature Guardians, and more nature-centred governance models
• Consider the opportunities and challenges involved
• Assess the feasibility of developing a Rights for the River Nene initiative
• Help strengthen the growing national movement for Rights of Nature
Whatever your relationship with your local river, whether personal, professional, ecological or simply curious, you are warmly invited to join us.
Places are limited. Please book in advance and let us know if you can no longer attend so that your place may be reallocated. Full joining instructions will be sent nearer the time.
Workshop cost
The vast majority of Rights of Nature work taking place in the UK is unfunded. It is powered by passionate and knowledgeable people working to create better futures for nature and communities alike.
This workshop still carries significant organisational and venue costs. Kettering Nature Group is underwriting much of the cost of delivering the workshop, while Josh is also providing his expertise at a greatly reduced rate in support of the project and wider movement.
We nevertheless wish to make this workshop accessible to all and so are offering fee-free places wherever possible. However, if you are able to make a donation, personally or from an organisation sponsoring your participation, please do so.
All monies received will be passed directly to the River Rights Network.
