The next session will be led by Brynja Hjálmsdóttir. Together, we’ll explore the role of play and how surrealist techniques can be used to spark creativity in writing. Brynja will also present her published works and share stories, tips, and tricks from her creative practice.The session will be hosted in English with additional support in Icelandic and Polish.
Brynja Hjálmsdóttir is an Icelandic writer whose debut poetry collection, Okfruman (The Zygote, 2019), received critical acclaim, was nominated for the The Icelandic Women’s Literary Award (Fjöruverðlaunin), and won Poetry Book of the Year at the Icelandic Bookseller’s Choice Awards. Her second poetry collection, Kona lítur við (A Woman Looks Over Her Shoulder), was nominated for the Maístjarnan Poetry Prize and published in English in 2024 in translation by Rachel Britton.
Brynja received the Jón úr Vör Poetry Award in 2022, along with the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Encouragement Award. Her novel Friðsemd (The Perished Land) was published in 2024. Brynja’s work has appeared in literary magazines and anthologies in Iceland and abroad.

Ritrými í Reykajvík / Reykjavík in Writing is a community-driven writing workshop series hosted at MENGI. The workshops are multilingual and admission free. Together we will explore creativity, poetry, publishing, multilingual writing, and more through shared practice, conversation, and guest-led sessions.
Writers of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome.
The first six meetings March-May 2026 will be hosted by Ewa Marcinek with guest writers and poets: Daniel Roh, Brynja Hjálmsdóttir, and Ragnar Helgi Ólafsson.
Ritrými in Reykjavík is co-founded by Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature and ALO Ísland, a non-profit organisation dedicated to community learning, and is brought to life with love by RVK Poetics and Ós Pressan.
