In this program we will tell community how Hilco has been in violation of environmental justice principles, and what that means for you.
About this Event

In October Hilco held a groundbreaking for the The Bellwether District attended by our elected officials, but community members were nowhere to be seen. Hilco moving forward with construction (despite leaving community demands for environmental justice unfulfilled for 3 years) marks a turning point in the struggle for healing & repair at the former PES oil refinery land.
Hilco has obtained permits from our government that allow them to drive the redevelopment forward more than a year ahead of schedule…while environmental justice is left in the rearview. We know what this is about: corporations taking the quickest path to a profit, while our government rubber stamps their plans. So, just like our community did with the PES refinery’s injustice, it’s time for residents to step up to fill the leadership void.
In 2024 Philly Thrive is initiating the formation of the “Peoples Environmental Justice Enforcement Agency.” Hilco may be able to breeze through approvals from our government, but that is not the case with the “Environmental Justice Permit” that WE the people have the power to authorize or deny. We’ve given Hilco a clear list of corrective actions to obtain OUR approval for the Bellwether District:
☑️ an improved flood plan that won’t flood nearby neighborhoods
☑️ robust clean up that doesn’t just cover over contamination with cement
☑️ community feedback on land use plans that STILL has yet to happen
☑️ fossil free energy use for the site
☑️ a strong Community Benefits Agreement that can guide job training & neighborhood investment according to the needs of nearby communities
As long as Hilco, with support from our government officials, has not satisfied the requirements for an EJ permit, construction will be difficult to move forward….
In this program we will tell community how Hilco has been in violation of environmental justice principles, and what that means to your life, family, & future, and how we can build people power to resist and build better and environmentally safer, futures!
