About this Event
Robert Anderson and Patrick Hemmerlé offer a rarely performed work for voice and piano, in a genre that was once very popular. Enoch Arden was composed early in Strauss’ career, and did more for his reputation at the time than his symphonic poems. In recent years the work has been championed by no less than Glenn Gould or Stephen Hough on the piano, and Fischer-Dieskau and Jon Vickers. A setting of Tennyson’s poetry, it explores the drama of a fisherman who spends 11 years on an island after a shipwreck, and returns home to find his wife remarried to his childhood friend.
