Steel guitar has been around in jazz since the 1940s with Alvino Rey and his big band, in the 1970s, with Buddy Emmons and Doug Jernigan. Richard Nelson keeps up this tradiKon on pedal steel in Ireland. Europe and Nashville USA.
Richard has released four albums of jazz standards; the first “Moments NoKce” in 2005, “Song for my Father” in 2019, “No more Blues” in 2021 (which charted in the USA airplay charts) and “October Rain” in 2023 which includes some original tunes. . He has collaborated with many of Ireland’s top jazz arKsts such as Phil Ware, Hugh Buckley, Lee Meehan, Ciaran Wilde, Cathal Roache and Myles Drennan.
He is the founder of the Irish Pedal steel guitar fesKval which has been running annually for 20 years, He has also performed at many leading jazz venues such as Montreaux jazz fesKval, North Sea jazz fesKval, Arthur’s Dublin, Rudy’s Nashville, Derry jazz fesKval and Portalen jazz club in Copenhagen. He is also a graduate of the DIT masters in jazz performance programme.
Richard is the co-author of “Jazz Theory for the Pedal Steel Guitarist” by Daniel Jones and Richard Nelson, a 167 page instrucKon as how to approach jazz on C6 tuning with 65 audio samples
