Join us in Ruthin for a unique workshop exploring folk fabric arts and dragon lore! Participate in creating a community dragon tapestry, crafting props, and engaging in a playful parade and light role-play.

We welcome 15-30 people of all skill levels. Bring your old clothes, keepsakes, and more for personalization.

The workshop lasts for two days at various hours:

2nd July 16:00 - 21:00

3rd July 10:00 - 18:00

On 4th July morning we will do a dragon parade through the streets of Ruthin.

Music performers are encouraged to join and enhance the parade. Artistic and performance skills are a plus but not necessary. Come share your creativity and enjoy a collective artistic journey!

Chasing the Dragon Ritual

I am deeply fascinated by the symbols and ritualistic performances in traditional folk culture, and I aim to explore their manifestations in the contemporary digital age and youth subcultures. For instance, in modern video games, the root "lore" from folklore is utilized as the backdrop narrative, serving not just as fictional tales but as tacit understandings rooted in a community’s collective psyche. Despite globalization, these folk stories often transcend their local origins, showcasing a diversity that stems from ancient myths, folk beliefs, and linguistic commonalities.
This year marks the "Year of the Dragon" in China, where the dragon symbolizes the cultural identity embedded in our collective memory. Interestingly, the red dragon is also a symbol for the Welsh people. Although it has been suggested that Western Dragons and Chinese Long have different connotations, fundamentally, both are mythical creatures from ancient lore.

I propose to collaborate with participants in Wales to create a "dragon" composed of several fabric tapestries. This dragon will be paraded through the streets of Ruthin, allowing participants to reflect and share their identities, experiences with mythical creatures, and their likes and dislikes in the contemporary world.

About the artist:

Funa Ye, born in Kunming, Yunnan, is an artist and researcher who lives and works in London and Beijing. Her practice critically engages with the realities of daily life and the perceived nexus between authority and various societal domains, such as differing power structures and margin groups. Her politically charged art uses pastiche to critique and satirize cultural uniformity. Funa’s recent work incorporates new technologies and engages with various ethnic communities, developing participatory, internet-based projects like "Exhibitionist: Curated Nail" and "Smart Master," probing the integration of art systems into personal and communal spaces. As a passionate advocate for self-publishing, Funa co-founded the independent publishing brand "MondayOFF," editing and authoring artist books like "Shamate zine" and "Fire Golden Flowers" .
Her solo exhibitions have been showcased at venues such as the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and Nottingham Contemporary, followed by group exhibits at esteemed institutions like the Museum für Fotografie, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, esea contemporary, PSA, Chronus Art Center, Art Center Nabi, and Rhizome of the New Museum.
Funa now teaches at Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts in the Experimental Art and Sci-Tech Art Department and at University College London's Slade School of Fine Art. She has also been invited to participate in conferences and lectures at Tate Modern, Asia Society New York, UCCA, Goldsmiths University, the China Academy of Art, and the Manchester China Institute, among others.
