Rhona Macfarlane
“A gorgeous song” Angela Griffin, BBC Radio 2
“Woozy bass and a gentle strum are the foundation for Macfarlane’s beautiful voice, which winds its way through a tranquil tune.” – Americana UK
Rhona Macfarlane is a rising Scottish singer-songwriter whose music blends reflective folk storytelling with sweeping, atmospheric instrumentation. With influences spanning from Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell to Rufus Wainwright, her work has been described as “building an atmosphere of tranquillity and respite” (Folk Radio UK). Known for her “emotional and reflective storytelling” (The Modern Record), Rhona’s music captures the bittersweet essence of life’s transitions, love, and identity.
Her forthcoming debut album, As The Chaos Unfolds, is an intimate exploration of self-discovery and resilience, born from the uncertainty of early adulthood. Due for release on January 24, 2025, the album was recorded in the stillness of Watercolour Studios, nestled in the Scottish Highlands. Produced in collaboration with Matt Ingram, known for his work with Laura Marling and Lianne La Havas, the album reflects Rhona’s journey of growth and captures moments of reflection in the face of life’s natural turbulence. “It’s a collection of songs for a coming-of-age experience."
Raised in the small seaside town of Montrose, Scotland, Rhona grew up in a creatively rich household. Surrounded by the sounds of family playing piano, guitar, and bagpipes, she was immersed in both folk traditions and the songwriting of artists like Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. Her formal training at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland deepened her passion for the violin and honed her compositional voice, weaving classical sensitivity into her music and string arrangements.
Macfarlane’s live performances have further solidified her reputation as a captivating new voice. She has supported artists like Josienne Clarke, Martha Reeves, and Chloe Foy and has appeared at festivals across Scotland, including Celtic Connections and the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival. Whether in a quiet listening room or a bustling festival stage, Rhona brings a gentle power to her performances, inviting listeners to reflect and find solace in her music.
