What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal type of motor neuron disease. It causes progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain. It's often called Lou Gehrig's disease after the famous baseball player who died in 1941 at age 37. ALS is one of the most devastating types of disorders that affect nerve and muscle function. Currently, there is not long-term treatment or cure. The disease is 100% fatal.
