On February 15, 1898, the United States battleship USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana Harbor, claiming the lives of 266 American sailors. This tragic event shocked the nation and became a defining moment leading to the Spanish–American War.On the 128th anniversary of the sinking, the Rough Riders will gather at American Legion Post 138 to honor the fallen through a solemn memorial ceremony. The event will include the presentation of colors by the Honor Guard, a ceremonial wreath-laying upon the waters, and a gun salute in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
We invite the community, veterans, and families to join us as we reflect, remember, and pay tribute to the brave sailors whose service and sacrifice helped shape our nation’s history.
“Remember the Maine.”
