Seattle Modern Orchestra (SMO) returns to Cornish's Raisbeck Auditorium for an evening of immersive music that explores the interrelated elements of time, spatialized sound, and performer/composer agency. The program includes founding director Jérémy Jolley’s (contro-)clessidra I-V; a series of layered bespoke duos crafted over more than a decade for SMO’s musicians. Focusing on the qualities of relation between the intra- and extra-personal experience, these duos become transformations of one another while interrogating the construction of traditional structure and form. Anahita Abbasi’s Situation VI features SMO musicians’ hallmark skills integrating improvisation and extended techniques. The score is centered on interchangeable "sound boxes" that evoke extra-musical sounds. Premiered online by SMO in 2021, this is the ensemble’s first live showing of the work.
Longtime professor of composition at the Evergreen State College and friend of SMO, Arun Chandra, has created Ways of Resisting. This new work utilizes text from Bertolt Brecht's Stories of Mr. Keuner, challenging the social and political contexts of music creation and performance and asking more generally what it means to deploy differing measures against power.
