Reimaging the Housing Crisis

The global housing crisis, especially in major cities, triggers health, social, and economic issues.
About this Event

Globally, there is an affordable housing crisis, especially in large metropolitan areas. This housing-specific crisis generates substantial ripple effects, ranging from higher physical and mental health service costs, domestic violence, compromised educational opportunities, anti-social behaviour, and significant productivity losses. Addressing this housing crisis is urgent. While specific local focus and tools differ, there is a convening narrative that frames the housing problem primarily as a supply problem. While plausible, this narrow statement overlooks the multifaceted, multilevel, multitemporal, and multisectoral factors that compound the prolonged housing crisis. These include, for example: · The systematic nature of the housing system, · the rhymes and sub-regional market dynamics, · the politically and racially loaded decision-making, · the often-stereotyped demand and design constraints, and · the growing hyper-local embeddedness of the housing sector, intertwined with global financial flows and geopolitical struggles. This joint Symposium, organised by the Bartlett UCL (BREI and DPU) and the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, aims to capture, unpack, and foreground these emerging, and sometimes ‘untraditional’, causes to propose new pathways of action. So please come along to this free event by register here, and help us ‘Reimaging the Housing Crisis’.
