About this Event
Toll is a visually and sonically explorative installation that follows the journey of the Toll bells in summer 2024. The artists created a mass participation artwork involving the carrying and ringing of thirty traditional folded hand bells. Each bell was stamped with a statement of reflection or response to the pandemic, collected from communities and individuals across the Highlands. The bells form a radical archive of the loss, joy, anger and peace that our communities experienced. The Toll bells have travelled over 1500 miles across our diverse Highland landscape. They have been rung quietly in forests and care homes, and they have been rung loudly in playgrounds and on mountain tops.
The Dispersed Memorial Forest was planted across the region in five locations: Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Moffat, Sanquhar and Stranraer, with over 400 native trees planted as a way to remember and honour each person who died from COVID-19 in the region. Additional trees were planted to represent other types of loss, and the ways communities came together over the pandemic.
