About this Event
Recoverist Culture Fix is back with a concert at Bridgewater Hall.
Join us on Thursday 12 December at 7.00 pm to be inspired by classical music in the form of Olivier Messiaen's Des canyons aux étoiles, a work commemorating the American Declaration of Independence bicentenary, the French composer visited the United States looking for inspiration.
Radiating monumental mysticism, Des canyons aux étoiles recalls the National Parks of Utah, a wild canyons of the desert state; a perfect partner for Messiaen’s powerful spirituality. Their colourful rock formations glow throughout this unique work. Messiaen faithfully replicates the songs of birds – God’s musicians, he called them – in virtuosic writing for the orchestra.
Pianist Steven Osborne is a huge champion of Messiaen’s music. Tonight, he joins BBC Philharmonic Orchestra’s Associate Artist Ludovic Morlot and horn player Martin Owen for a rare chance to hear this luminous work by one of the most distinctive voices of the 20th century.

Recoverist Culture Fix is our programme of regular, specially curated cultural events. Part of Portraits of Recovery’s commitment to increasing access and engagement with the arts for people and communities in recovery, Recoverist Culture Fix is also a chance to meet like-minded people, make friends and enjoy a rich cultural experience in Greater Manchester.
Our aim is to empower those in recovery by fostering their cultural participation, demystifying contemporary art, and amplifying the voices of an often marginalised community. Through culture, we build ambition and empower a stigmatised community to drive systemic change.
