Gerry Firkins is a local botanist who has a passion for plants and loves to share this with others. He has worked for the RSPB, Sheffield Council, the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, and Sheffield University, in teaching botany, surveying and leading field trips. He has recently been an advisor to the National Trust and is currently a tutor for the Botanical Society of the British Isles. An important element in monitoring and assessing an environment are the natural history sightings. There are many ways of collecting such data and one way is on an app called iNaturalist. Gerry will demonstrate this app and its powerful functionality using both a mobile and a laptop, with tips as to how to get the best results. In a second presentation, Gerry will talk about the invasive plants that we have in Sheffield, their threat to local habitats, the legislation that surrounds some of them, and the potential ones of the future.
