About this Event
Sunday, April 12, Bandaloop, West Oakland
RECLAIM is a daytime dance party for people who are BIPOC, Queer, or both!
🎶 The Music
Charles Hawthorne (they/them) is a Black queer DJ, event producer, and community builder based in Oakland, CA. Through their music and community work, they strive to create spaces where queer and trans people can gather to move their bodies and cultivate joy. Charles is the creator of Five Finger Disco and they serve as the Board President of Oaklash.
Charles Hawthorne weaves a blend of disco, house, global club, and RnB to create a unique dancefloor experience rooted in connection, presence, and movement. Their style brings striking percussive elements, lush instrumentation, and legendary vocals to pull people out of their heads and onto the dance floor. Heavily influenced by the style of the early disco and house DJs, Charles moves beyond genres to builds a shared groove that facilitates a journey through the history and movement of Black queer dance music. Charles believes you can’t trust a DJ who doesn’t dance, the proof is in the pudding, honey!
🌀 Our Community
RECLAIM is about creating a vibrant space where bipoc and queer folks can come together, connect, and vibe as one community. Our goal? To build bridges and unite, so we can dance our way into the future we’ve been dreaming of.
We’re calling all BIPOC folks—whether you’re Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color—to join us on the dance floor. And we’re calling all QUEER folks—gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, questioning, gender-nonconforming, or however you proudly define your queerness.
To be clear: if you’re white and queer, come on down! If you’re brown and straight, we want you too! The only thing we ask is that you bring your best self and be ready to groove.
Our Vision
RECLAIM envisions a world where bipoc and queer people are moving towards liberation together. We center the Black, the Brown, and Queer because now, more than ever, we need fresh visions to create a thriving world for all—regardless of who we love, how we identify, or the melanin in our skin.
Our mission is to unite BIPOC and Queer dancers through communal movement, self-expression, and meaningful exchange. By dancing together, we empower ourselves to build deeper connections, find courage, and co-create a more just and compassionate world.
RECLAIM stands in solidarity with Black, Brown, Queer, Indigenous, Palestinian, Congolese, Sudanese and all people resisting oppressive systems.
