Head to Boyd Plaza during First Thursday on Main for Columbia’s second annual Ramadan Night Market, courtesy of the CMA and USC Humanities Collaborative The Muslim South! Enjoy a night of community and culture — shop with handicraft and clothing vendors, grab a post-sunset chai and dinner from local food trucks, and participate in free activities including bracelet making, paper lantern making, henna, and personalized calligraphy bookmarks. Throughout the evening Muslims in observance of Ramadan will have space dedicated to prayer. Qur’an recitation will take place after the evening prayer time. Come by for this welcoming market, meet members in and outside the Muslim community, and learn about one of the most important traditions of the Islamic faith.
Free. Galleries open and free as part of Free First Thursday at the CMA.
In the event of inclement weather, this program will be moved indoors.
About Ramadan:
Muslims make up over 25% of the global population. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims all over the world as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. During this holy month that commemorates Prophet Muhammad’s first revelation, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. In Muslim countries, after breaking their fast (iftar), Muslims spend their time in spiritual devotion. Muslims in the U.S. reflect the diversity found in the faith all over the world: from African, Arab, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Southeast Asian countries.
In Muslim countries, markets and bazaars come to life at night. Ramadan night markets offer a space for Muslims to socialize during the month and shop in preparation for Eid-ul Fitr, the feast celebrated at the end of the holy month. Ramadan night markets are a significant source of income for small businesses and street vendors, providing a boost to local economies.
