We're coming to Hamburg! And who are we? We're Stockholm based label and party planning committee Rama Lama Records that since 2016 have put out music we love from bands we love. In 2022, we won indie label of the year at the Swedish Indie Awards so at least we're doing something right. Since the start, we've also done gigs in Sweden but also Copenhagen and London and now it's time for Germany.
There will be three great bands playing: Stockholm psych popers Melby, Copenhagen's indie rockers Kindsight and Malmö's experimental fuzzpop-duo Mary Anne's Polar Rig. Come check it out!
About the acts
Melby
On a first, careless, listen, Stockholm four-piece Melby might seem like a charming, fun little jangle-pop band. Pay a little more attention however, and you’ll find their waters run a lot deeper than that. The band (Matilda Wiezell, Are Engen Steinsholm, David Jehrlander and Teo Jernkvist) have all the flash and sparkle of your favourite indie band, but add an ability to touch moods and feelings with a meaning beyond most of their peers. Their guitars, drums and synths rattle, roll and flicker around each other, all held together by the soul-shiver in Wiezell’s vocals, to make immaculate little guitar-pop gems, equally dusted with sadness and sugar.
Signing up with Stockholm label Rama Lama Records, they debuted with the willowy, open-hearted psych-pop single Human in 2016. Debut album None of this makes me worry was released in 2019, earning praise from Clash and The Line Of Best Fit, and taking the band on tour in Scandinavia, Germany and the UK. Last year, they returned with the follow-up Looks like a map. The sophomore LP sounds like a band expanding their range and reaching for the new – they retain their gift for glittering melodies, but the music here is less structured, less restricted than that they’ve made before, constantly shapeshifting and morphing, and embracing a psychedelic fluidity where nothing feels set in stone.
Kindsight
Danish four-piece Kindsight make music that draws from 80’s and 90’s alternative rock and combines it with the shimmering Scandinavian pop that the region has become so renowned for, resulting in a sound that is both fuzzy and melodic in equal measure.
In 2022, the band released their debut LP via Rama Lama Records to praise such as "your new favourite band". Titled "Swedish Punk", it's an album packed with charming and infectiously catchy noise-jangle-pop melodies full of exuberant optimism and coming-of-age tales inspired by acts such as Pixies, Cocteau Twins, Snail Mail and Big Thief.
Atop jangling guitars, Nina Rasmussen’s distinctive voice dances somewhere between that of Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval and Alvvays’ Molly Ranking, leaving the listened renched in the nostalgic optimism of summers gone by. There’s not a single song that would feel out of place in an 00’s independent movie. The band possess an unmistakable talent for crafting disarmingly buoyant yet achingly nostlagic indie-rock songs based on the everyday.
The band released new single "Love You Baby All The Time" during the fall of 2022 and the experimental "Madhouse Breakout Multitool" right before playing the SXSW festival. The band is currently working on their sophomore record.
Mary Anne's Polar Rig
Mary Anne’s Polar Rig is a rock band coming straight from the underground scene of Malmö, Sweden. With a sound heavily influenced by the 90’s scene as well as the new wave of female fronted rock, they play a sort of “fuzzed out” pop where the dynamic vocals together with the noisy jingley-jangley guitars are in focus. The band released their first 7” EP in 2018 and followed up with a collection of songs from their first years together creating a debut album that came out January 2021.
During lockdown the band morphed from a 4 piece to a guitar duo and went in the studio again, now in search for a new, more experimental approach to producing a rock album. Wanting to take a step away from the raw garage sound they had on their debut LP they created, in collaboration with various musicians and friends, what they call to be their “first real studio album” Makes You Wonder . The double LP was released together with Rama Lama Records in March 2023 and with a brand new 5 piece band, Mary Anne’s Polar Rig are now out playing the album live, compressed into a loud and energetic set.
