In these times of a narrowing set of corporatized avenues for artists to gain public attention, the monopolization of virtually every singular radio station being sucking into larger platforms with profits over promotion, EVR remains committed to its original cause: a grassroots source of independent minded DJs and programmers that serves its community. Free of dictated playlists, our hosts come from a wide and diverse background, schooled and deeply knowledgeable about their passion.
Come through June 4th and meet some of the station’s DJs, and learn more about the station’s commitment to amplify the East Village identity as a crossroads of a myriad of fused cultures, revolutionary ideologies in art, music, film, poetry and more. EVR looks to focus itself on this legacy with a freeform approach to radio that will blur boundaries and take cues from the great FM stations of the past, and amplify the mission of the few truly independent minded stations that exist in the present. Here we will thread the connections between post-punk, free jazz, minimal techno, hip-hop, global beat, soundtrack music, spoken-word, garage punk, pop, experimental, DIY, reggae, dub, and yet-to-be-christened genres.
Live hosts will remind you why a “playlist” on a service will never replace the living, breathing radio creator: someone who takes you on a journey that traverses the limits of genre, guiding and informing, enlightening, drawing the connections into cohesiveness. The medium of radio is perhaps the greatest channel of information: segues underline the greatness of two tracks together, the listener’s mind allows open interpretation free of flickering images and zero-attention span feeding forces at work. It is personal. With its shopfront studio once again on display right on 1st Avenue, EVR takes off again.
Neonlichter
Neonlichter’s knack for finding contrasts and polymorphic textures across genres has garnered acclaim and scorn in equal measure, most memorably deemed “complete dystopian garbage”. Whether through astral zoners, geometric music, low speed chuggers, or transgenre freakouts, the search is always for the space between the notes, regardless of the BPM or if drums even factor into it.
They can be heard locally plumbing the depths of sonic weirdness on East Village Radio (Playing Out Of Time) every other Friday at 4 PM, online curating the Days Of Steam mix series, and north of the border as one third of Montreal junglist shoegazers Maisonneuve and Toronto dub-concrète psychonauts Dastgâmachine.

ur kanmani
ur kanmani, host of "enter the hibiscus" on East Village Radio, is a multi-hyphenate artist and public health worker who aims to blend global genres to find the threads that connect us all. growing up, she was influenced by the funky sounds her dad played: his tabla beats, Harris Jayaraj funk, Pink Floyd’s spaciness, and Kadri Gopalnath’s genre bending. ur kanmani has played from bangalore to queens, basement to rooftop, club to radio, with dancers, musicians, and visuals to create a sensory experience. ‘kanmani’ is a term of endearment in tamil, meaning that when she’s djing, she’s yours.
ciénaga
ciénaga is the radio operator of SMART RIDER PRINCIPLES (SRP) on East Village Radio. SRP is a musical colonoscopy that finds expression through silliness, asymmetry, and the entropic power of the clang. by hewing together a wide palette of sounds, SRP forges a musical “shatter zone” - a term used by anthropologists to describe peripheral areas of a state without order or clear state authority. formed under immense pressure and marked by a rich tapestry of cultures and languages, these inaccessible areas serve as havens for the ungovernable. wielding the shards of this and that, SRP guffaws, shimmies, and slices away at notions of mastery in favor of something much more fun: ham-handed musical whimsy.
