In celebration of Shelagh Delaney Day hear from special female guest speakers from the arts, social history, and local politics in Salford.
About this Event

Kick up Fuss and the Mary Quaile Club are working together again.

Ahead of the Shelagh Delaney Day 25 November and in celebration of the local playwright, join us for an afternoon of female empowerment at the historic Working Class Movement Library where we celebrate the rich tapestry of Salfordian Women past and present.

Salford is a city of working women and men shaped by the industrial revolution. Social progress for women has been made by those women who campaigned for the vote, equal pay, birth control and improved nursery provision etc. This event will celebrate the lives of those women and take inspiration for the future.

The formidable Women's Rights Activist Louise Woodward-Styles will be chairing and sharing her story of setting up the Shelagh Delaney Day with the equally indomitable Roni Ellis, Artistic Director and Theatre Manager of Salford Arts Theatre, who will also be joining us to talk about her work in the arts in the City.

To celebrate Salford's political life we welcome Anne-Marie Humphrey. Anne-Marie has served Salford in several wards as a councillor and enjoyed the great honor of wearing the civic chains of office serving Salford as its Mayor. She will speak about her life in Salford how she came up in politics and what it has meant to her, a women from Salford, to hold such a prestigious political position.

To provide the historic context of women's activism in Salford Bernadette Hyland from the Mary Quaile Club will tell us tales of the unsung Salfordian women from the past.

The event is free but do bring cash as we are asking for donations to 'The Survivor Project'. There will also be a raffle.

Following the event there will be an informal social after the event 10 mins walk away.

The event is sponsored by NEU Manchester and UNITE Community Greater Manchester and all donations will go to Salford Survivor Project https://thesurvivorproject.co.uk.

The Survivor Project was founded in response to the deaths of two women in Salford. With their deaths, Leanne and Linzi became angels who now inspire the wings of butterflies to grow and find their freedom. This project is dedicated to them and those who have died before and since at the hands of abusers.
