Discussing Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative? by Mark Fisher
Led by former Greenlight bookseller Carlo, our Radical Nonfiction Book Group meets monthly to read and discuss nonfiction titles related to the issues of history, politics, and the promise of a better world, just around the corner!
For January, the group discusses Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism, a sharp analysis of the post-ideological malaise that suggests that the economics and politics of free market neo-liberalism are givens rather than constructions. Using examples from politics, film (like Children Of Men, Jason Bourne, and Supernanny), fiction (Le Guin and Kafka), work and education, Fisher argues that capitalist realism colors all areas of contemporary experience, is anything but realistic, and asks how capitalism and its inconsistencies can be challenged.
