Radical Nonfiction Book Group with Carlo
Discussing The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan
Led by former Greenlight bookseller Carlo, our Radical Nonfiction Book Group meets monthly to read and discuss nonfiction titles related to the issues of history, politics, and the promise of a better world, just around the corner!
For May, the group discusses The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan, a National Book Award–winning story. A tour de force of historical reportage, The Worst Hard Time rescues an iconic chapter of American history from the shadows—the Dust Bowl that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, The Worst Hard Time tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Further, brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, Egan does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes.
