About this Event
ENSEMBLE LAUDE presents QUEEN - Voices from the margins sing their power.
A concert celebrating greatness of those who sing their truth, against the odds:
Female mathematicians who put Apollo on the moon; maidens who outwit their pirate captors, beauty that rises above of earthly winds, cowboys who are secretly fond of each other.
Music by 9th-century Byzantine composer St Kassia of Greece (first female composer of liturgical music), Renaissance composer Vicente Lusitano (first black composer published in Europe), Canadian Marie-Claire Saindon (music about Katherine Johnson, the black mathematician who contributed to the Apollo landing), poetry by Ingrid Jonker (South African anti-Apartheid activist) set to music by Franco Prinsloo, and featuring a second half celebrating queer voices, from Radiohead through Freddy Mercury.
Features the world premiere of 'Sacred Journey' by Ramona Luengen to poetry by Alan Drengson in memory of Alice Drengson.
Finale features a drag performance by our Special Guest, Drag King Sylvester Stalletto
