Title:
Pulp and Paper Manufacturing, Fixed Equipment Mechanical Integrity
Introducing the Presenter:
From Surrey, BC, Margaret Gorog received a Bachelor of Applied Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. She has worked for Weyerhaeuser, International Paper and is now with Houghton Cascade Holdings, LLC which is located in Lynden, WA. She has provided materials engineering support to the pulp and paper industry for over 35 years covering corrosion control, materials selection, inspection, welding and failure analysis. Participating in mill maintenance outages has been a major focus throughout her career. She is active in TAPPI, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, participating in the Corrosion and Materials Engineering section of the Plant Engineering and Project Management Committee. She is a member of ASM International and has held all board positions of the Puget Sound Chapter based in Seattle, WA.
Summary of Topic:
Mechanical integrity of fixed equipment such as tanks, pressure vessels, and boilers, means that the equipment is designed, built, operated, and maintained in such a manner as to contain the process. The goal is to prevent releases of any kind and results in safe and reliable operations. Corrosion is the primary damage mechanism that drives material selection of fixed equipment in pulp and paper mills. This presentation is divided into two parts. The first is a quick overview of the pulp and paper making process. The second part covers aspects of mechanical integrity programs and provides a summary of typical materials used in various environments throughout a mill. Though stainless steel is widely used in many processes, examples are given where the limits of its resistance are exceeded. Inspection is required to find damage in fixed equipment. Common nondestructive methods are noted. The inspection findings need to be analyzed to determine whether repairs are required. Analytical fitness for service methods have been developed to help with these evaluations. Repairs are usually in the form of welding. Examples of long- and short-term repairs are provided.
