PUBLIC ADDRESS: MATERIAL MEMORYRafael Fernando Gutierrez Jr.
Enzminger Studio is pleased to present Public Address: Material Memory, a video installation by Rafael Fernando Gutierrez Jr., on view for Second Saturday, April 11 from 7–10pm at Enzminger Studio, 1906 S. Flores. The event is free and open to the public.
Public Address: Material Memory brings together a series of video collage works created from the artist’s personal VHS archive. Drawing from recorded television, interviews, public information programming, propaganda, and proselytized content, the project treats each tape as a form of material memory, embedded with the cultural residue of broadcast media.
Gutierrez employs a labor-intensive analog editing process using a dual-deck VHS system. Through techniques such as pause-record editing, control track overwriting, and generational tape copying, the work accumulates distortion, compression artifacts, and signal decay. These disruptions become visible marks within the image, foregrounding the physical and temporal instability of analog media.
The artist refers to this method as Analog Transmission Collage. Rather than cutting and assembling discrete images, the broadcast signal itself becomes the site of intervention. Repetition and degradation reshape the source material, exposing the structures of authority embedded in broadcast television while transforming archival footage into something unstable, fragmented, and newly legible.
Installed across CRT monitors, the works emphasize the relationship between medium and message, revisiting obsolete technologies as active sites of inquiry.
