Psychoanalysis as Science

This event brings together esteemed psychoanalysts Christian Dunker and Ian Parker to address the often contentious status of psychoanalysis within the scientific community. Historically overlooked for the Nobel Prize on multiple occasions, Sigmund Freud’s legacy as a scientist has been questioned widely. Dunker and Parker will present their distinct perspectives on the subject of 'Psychoanalysis as Science’, leading into a discussion with audience participation.

SPEAKERS

Christian Ingo Lenz Dunker born in 1966, is a psychoanalyst and Full Professor of Psychoanalysis and Psychopathology at USP's Institute of Psychology. His post-doctorate studies was at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is a member of the School of Forums of the Lacanian Field, twice awarded the Jabuti Prize, an article writer for Boitempo and UOL-Tilt and coordinates the Laboratory of Social Theory, Philosophy and Psychoanalysis at USP. He is the author of more than 100 scientific articles, a guest lecturer in more than 15 countries and has published 14 books, several of them in English, French and Spanish: Structure and Constitution of the Psychoanalytic Clinic (Zagodoni, 2012), Mal-Estar, Sofrimento e Sintoma (Boitempo, 2015), Transformations of Intimacy (Ubu, 2017), The Clown and the Psychoanalyst (Planeta, 2018), Passion of Ignorance (Contracorrente, 2020), Biografia da Depressão (Paidós, 2021), Lacan e a Democracia (Boitempo, 2022), Lutos Finitos e Infinitos (Paidós (2023) and Ciência Pouca é Bobagem, porque a Psicanálise não é uma pseudociência (Ubu). His YouTube channel "Falando Nisso" (Talking About It), with 400,000 subscribers, has covered psychoanalysis, philosophy, mental health and politics. A practicing Palmeirense, he is married to Ana Cristina Dunker, with whom he publishes in the field of education, and is the father of Mathias and Nathalia.

Ian Parker is a psychoanalyst in Manchester, UK, Honorary Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Manchester and Secretary of Manchester Psychoanalytic Matrix. He completed his training with the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research (CFAR) in London, and became an Analyst of the Centre in 2003. He is registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and is also a member of the College of Psychoanalysts – UK.
