4K Restoration! EASY RIDER premiered in July 1969, at the tail end of a turbulent decade. Directed by Dennis Hopper and co-written with Peter Fonda, the film stars the two icons alongside Jack Nicholson, who delivers a brilliant, career-making supporting performance.
The story follows Hopper and Fonda as they ride their choppers from Los Angeles to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Along the way, they encounter the issues and tensions of the times as they encounter the best and worst of American life — from the caring peacefulness of a hippie commune to the hatred and closed mindedness of small town America.
Dennis Hopper in his directorial debut presents a visual feast, capturing the stunning landscape of the American west. This cinematography is aided by a groundbreaking soundtrack that blends in perfectly to the beautiful scenery. The music is performed by many of the iconic rock artists of the 60's, including The Band, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix and Steppenwolf.
After nearly 60 years, the film still holds up well in its social commentary of the divisions that still exist in America today. As the poster for the movie quotes "A story of a man who went out looking for America and couldn't find it anywhere".
EASY RIDER is a perfect fit for Psych-Out Cinema and a ride every film lover at The Revue Cinema will want to take. (TERRY O' FLAHERTY)
