We are pleased to invite you to the next Medicine as a Science lecture with Prof. Hugues de Thé, MD, PhD, from France.
Prof. de Thé is a distinguished biochemist and physician, currently affiliated with the Hôpital Saint-Louis and the Collège de France. With a dual medical and scientific background, he is widely recognized for his transformative research on the relationships between gene transcription, nuclear architecture, and cancer development. He is particularly renowned for his key contribution to the characterization of PML/RARA, the fusion gene responsible for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).
Throughout his career, Prof. de Thé has focused on understanding the molecular action of PML/RARA and its impact on transcriptional regulation and PML nuclear bodies. His pioneering work demonstrated how targeted treatments—specifically arsenic and retinoic acid—induce the degradation of the oncogenic protein. These discoveries directly inspired clinical trials that have led to a definitive cure for almost all APL patients, establishing it as the first historical example of a leukemia cured by targeted therapy.
In his lecture,” Deciphering the molecular bases for the cure of acute promyelocytic leukemia ” , Prof. de Thé will trace the journey from fundamental discovery to clinical triumph. He will explore the assembly of PML nuclear bodies and the biochemical mechanisms of protein degradation, while also discussing his current research into the role of PML in therapeutic responses across other forms of leukemia. This session will provide profound insights into how basic science can be translated into life-saving medical protocols.
The event will take place in Jonášova hall on Monday, May 18th, starting at 4:00 PM. The presentation will be conducted in English, and a video recording will be available afterward.
