Preserving the Yard: A Virtual Tour of HBCU Art Collections that Archive our History & Culture.
An Overview
The HBCU Digital Art Project (H-DAP) will host a HBCU Art Collections Tour highlighting the essential role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in shaping the story of American art.
The outreach event will be held on Martha’s Vineyard @ Oak Bluffs Library on Friday, July 31, 2026, immediately following the HBCU President's Summit feature President's representing: Johnson C. Smith University.
The event will feature an engaging panel discussion with HBCU art collection representatives who will guide attendees through a dynamic virtual tour of significant works from their respective HBCU art collections, illustrating how these collections document generations of artistic excellence, cultural memory, and American innovation.
A lively Q&A will foster dialogue around stewardship, digitization, scholarship, and the future of inclusive art history.
This session will aim to elevate HBCU art collections as foundational to the nation’s artistic legacy, and also demonstrate visionary leadership in shaping a more complete and inclusive understanding of American art for generations to come.
Why:
As the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States, this gathering will serve as a timely and celebratory platform to ensure that HBCU art collections nationwide are recognized as central to the American art narrative.
The program will amplify the HBCU Digital Art Project's leadership role in advancing equitable access, scholarship, and preservation initiatives, and will underscore the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s ongoing commitment to expanding the canon of American art through meaningful partnerships nationwide.
This 2:00–3:30 p.m. session follows the 2nd Annual STATE of the HBCUnion ADDRESS during Legacy Week on the Vineyard.
Refreshments will be served.
