About this Event

Join Gary Comer Youth Center this Black History Month for an event dedicated to the preservation of our history and legacy.

Immerse yourself in meaningful interactive activities, including digitization services and "Archivist in a Box", brought to you by the University of Chicago Library and Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC), along with shadow-box making and family portraits, all designed to honor and preserve personal and community stories. Explore a curated pop-up bookstore by Semicolon Bookstore, and engage with history through exhibits featuring rare memorabilia from the archives of BLK MKT Vintage, South Side Community Art Center, and The DuSable Museum.

The event will be hosted by "Dilla", Chicago Historian, and feature a powerful and thought-provoking panel discussion with guest speakers exploring why preserving Black culture and history is essential for shaping the future. Panelists include musician, actor and philanthropist, Vic Mensa, Kiyanna and Jay Handy of BLK MKT Vintage, Jada-Amina and LaMar Gayles of South Side Community Art Center, and other special guests soon to be announced.

Celebrate with us for an inspiring and hands-on experience that uplifts and centers the richness of Black culture and heritage.

Free childcare and meals for your little ones will be provided. They will enjoy storytelling, music, and craft activities with Carmenita Peoples and Keila Strong. Must be at least 5 years of age.

NOTE: For those taking advantage of the digitization services, please bring a maximum of 8-10 paper documents or photos that you are interested in digitally preserving. For those participating in shadow-box making, please bring photos, family artifacts or decorative elements you would like to include in your box. Supplies will be provided, but you are welcome to bring any of your own.
