We are excited to invite you to a special two-night event of theatre featuring the powerful staged reading of Jane: Abortion and the Underground, a timely and provocative part-documentary drama written by Paula Kamen. It tells the story of “Jane,” an underground abortion service that operated in Chicago from 1969 to 1973. This feminist collective provided a safe alternative for thousands of women during a time when abortion was illegal. The timely play is based on original interviews and offers an inspiring and unapologetic story of feminist resistance and organizing to meet women’s most immediate and critical needs. We are thrilled to announce that this event marks the world debut of our new theatre initiative: Powerstories Powerups. A Powerup is pop-up theatre that aims to bring powerful, thought-provoking stories to the stage for limited dates, creating unique and impactful experiences for our audiences.
Our own executive director and founder of Powerstories, Fran Powers, will be one of the actors on stage.
This PowerUp will be held at HCC Mainstage Ybor on January 6 EST; then, we will be on Zoom for a conversation with three of the original Janes - Heather Booth, Eileen Smith, and Diane Stevens on January 7 at 7pm EST. All ticketholders will receive an emailed link to join this special event mid-day on January 7.
Tickets are $25.
This is a rare opportunity to witness a piece of history that, unfortunately, remains incredibly relevant today.
