Outline of the day
The in-person CPD day will commence with a Portsmouth Historic Dockyard tour lead by Dr Ann Coats. The tour led by Dr Ann Coats will be informed by 30 years of studying the built and social history of Portsmouth Dockyard, began during her DPhil, ‘The economy of the navy and Portsmouth: a discourse between the civilian naval administration of Portsmouth dockyard and the surrounding communities, 1650–1800.’
We will be looking at heritage assets within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, which dates in earnest from the 17th century and was remodelled first by Edmund Dummer and then again by Samuel Bentham from 1799 onwards and buildings and structures resulting from those periods and later.
After lunch (not included in the cost) there will be an afternoon tour of Victory Live: The Big Repair project with attendees having special guided access to the Victory Live scaffold accompanied by one of the projects Shipwrights to discuss the repairs in close-up. In addition, Rosemary Thornber, Principal Heritage Advisor ‑ HMS Victory, will guide a group into No.2 dock below the Victory and discuss how she achieved Scheduled Monument Consent and liaised with Historic England over the repairs.
The Big Repair is one of the biggest conservation projects in the UK.
