Prerequisite: This is a series of three-day portrait drawing classes offered for beginners or those with some drawing experience who want further instruction. The series of three classes repeat each month. If you cannot make some of the dates, contact the instructor for options.
Description: 3-day portrait drawing workshops (One class a week over 3 weeks.)
• Day 1 - Drawing tips and tricks: (The first date of each workshop) will cover the basics of drawing a portrait, beginning with composition and learning how to choose a good reference photo. You will learn how to draw the correct proportions of the face, mark making and different methods of transferring images to begin a drawing. Supplies needed will be discussed and tips and tricks for how different effects can be achieved in your drawing.
• Day 2 - Starting a portrait: (The second date of each workshop.) Once reference images have been selected a drawing can be started. Instruction will go more in depth as to how to create details in a portrait, hair, features, shading, etc.
• Day 3 - Fine tuning the final portrait: (The third date of each workshop.) Portraits done well take time, so this class is for finishing up the portrait drawing, if possible. Further instruction will be provided.
Bring to class: For the first session, all supplies are provided. You may bring your own if you choose. Do bring three or four 8 x 10 reference photos of subjects (shoulders and head, not full body) you would like to draw. The photo can be of a loved one, a favorite celebrity, or just an interesting photo of a person you find online. Note: A photo should not be chosen without the original photographer’s permission. Look for clean crisp (not fuzzy) images that have nice contrast of light and shadow. If you do not have access to a printer, or need help selecting an image, you may contact Laurie, the instructor ahead of time and she will help.
Accessibility note: This class is held in the instructor’s residential home and in a basement studio, therefore there are stairs.
