Adults and older teens - welcome photographer and wilderness expert David Neils for a discussion of essential backcountry safety tips. Most hikers and backpackers know about the "Ten Essentials." Packing the "Ten Essentials" whenever you step into the backcountry, even on day hikes, is a good habit. But after reviewing the Search and Rescue reports from four national parks (Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone and Glacier) David realized that many of the backcountry deaths were due to common factors beyond the Ten Essentials. In response, he developed the Ten Essentials Plus system which includes critical steps before you begin your adventure as well as closing the loop on the other end. David has been refining this system since 1971 and has used it very successfully as he's spent time filming and studying mountain lions in some of the wildest places in the west.
David's goal with the workshop is to help you be more at ease in the backcountry, whether on or off trail. And stay safe. We will discuss real backcountry examples from Colorado.
