About this Event

Poetry Workshop

When workers choose to create a culture counter to the predator class & for the working class, poetry can tell the truth & meaning thereof, & impart motivation to win our liberation. For poetry to become an aid in our struggle for freedom, we must recruit all parts of ourselves to the cause. In this workshop, we’ll dialogue about dialectics & expressing repressed parts of ourselves through poetry. We’ll also dialogue about how to process writer’s block, imposter syndrome, & self-imposed limitations. There will be time to share what we’ve written. While focused on poetry, this workshop will be of benefit to all writers.

Respirators required & provided because airborne illnesses K*ll & disable people. KF94, KN95, N95, or P100 acceptable. Please go outside to unmask unless you’re drinking via a sip valve pre-installed in your respirator. With gratitude to Common Humanity Collective, 4 large air purifiers will be running for the entire workshop. The room will be aerated prior to & throughout the workshop via 2 large roll-up doors. Please wear layers. Our event space, Sucka Free Collective, is wheelchair-accessible: on the 1st floor with no stairs to the entrance or the single-stall bathroom. Seating available. Narcan & water will be available throughout the event. Presentation slides will be emailed to attendees prior to the workshop. Workshop is NOTAFLOF for Black &/or Native attendees & sliding-scale $5-50 for everyone else.

I’m Izara Achamyalesh, your teacher: a 30 y.o. disabled, airborne-aware, still-masking, & Black 1st-gen Habesha-amerikkkan cultural worker & marxist. My cultural work involves words, sounds, stars, & visuals. Among my greatest beliefs is that our trauma eclipses our power until we’re courageous enough to face it. I’ve felt fortunate to witness students in my past workshops break years-long writer’s block, write songs & freestyle when they’d never done so before, & find merit in writing poetry. My intention in so much of what I do is to make complex things simple.
