Arrive early for door prizes. Our opening poet, Al Black, will get things started with a short reading, followed by our featured poet.
Tim Conroy is a poet and former educator. His work has been published in journals, magazines, and compilations, including Fall Lines, Auntie Bellum, Blue Mountain Review, Jasper, Marked by the Water, and Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. In 2017, Muddy Ford Press published his first book of poetry, Theologies of Terrain, edited by Columbia, South Carolina, poet laureate Ed Madden. No True Route was released in 2023. A founding board member of the Pat Conroy Literary Center established in his brother’s honor, Tim Conroy lives in Beaufort.
Originally from Lafayette, Indiana, Al Black moved to Columbia to work at The University of South Carolina in facilities management before retiring to become a full-time writer. Black attended college at Ball State, a voice major and an athlete. He would go on to coach college, high-school and semi-pro. His first book I Only Left for Tea (Muddy Ford Press, 2015) began a new vocation and career for Black, who is widely known in Columbia for his 15 years running Mind Gravy, a weekly open mic at Cool Beans. Akin to the famed James Brown line, Black may be the hardest working poet in South Carolina.
