About this Event
One of our organizers (it's Sammy!) has been dreaming of a weekly feedback group where she can share her poems. While she loves open mics, she's been dreaming of poetry friends who understand her vision for her writing and her voice, and can give her meaningful feedback, that she can see for dinner weekly, AND can be in bed for 9:30pm.
Often the process of writing poetry is therapeutic. It is the act of exposing oneself in words, your true authentic voice. It is a brave and vulnerable thing to do.
This group is a blend between a support group and a poetry writing group. Poetry is a personal practice. This is a group for people who need poetry to live. It is a group for people who want to use words to connect deeply with people and themselves.
While this group is poetry focused, if you don't mind a bunch of poets - all other art forms are welcome especially creative non-fiction, storytelling, short stories, and memoir.
THE SCHEDULE
We'll meet at 6pm to eat dinner potluck style (or can venmo $10)! Bring something to share. I'll have a bottle of wine and lots of tea!
Around 6:45pm we'll check in, and spend 10 minutes journaling.
Then we'll have poems to read and discuss as a group!
We'll do our first feedback round using the critical response protocol.
In the protocol, each artist brings a piece to share, an artist statement, and three craft-related questions they want feedback on. There is no reading before hand (aka no homework!!). The gift is in the listening.
After reading the artist statement and poem, the participants will share what they found meaningful or connected to, answer the three craft-related questions, and then an optional suggestions and opinions round. Each person will have 25 minutes of time.
Then we will take a break! Depending on how many people are interested in our group, we will have 1 to 3 feedback sessions. You will have to sign up in advance.
Then we'll hang out until bedtime!
Our first meeting will be a time just to get to know each other's voices and writing. Bring a piece to share with the group. No feedback! Just listening.
