There’s an old adage amongst photographers that “the best camera is the one you have with you.” Nowadays, that usually means a smartphone.
About this Event

In this session, we’ll learn to embrace smartphone photography and go over some tips and tricks to get the best shot you can with your phone. Topics we will cover include:

  • Mastering the features in phone apps
  • Embracing what makes shooting on a phone unique over standard cameras
  • Framing and setting up shots
  • Using everyday things you might have on you to enhance photos and collaborating with others
  • Simple edits that can make photos pop

Other details:

  • Bring your fully charged cellphone. If worried about battery life, bring a portable charge bank if you have one. No charging facilities will be available onsite
  • Closest washroom is at the Oliver Exchange Building
  • There will be some instruction to start, followed by hands-on practice and lots of time to ask questions
  • Cost: This is a pay-what-you-can workshop. A suggested donation of $10 is appreciated, if you’re able.

About the Photographer

Sam Brooks is a photo, video and audio producer based here in Edmonton. With a background in engineering and a career in journalism, he loves to find new ways to blend technology and storytelling.

For almost two decades, Sam has worked hard to hone the craft of visual storytelling. He believes that, while specific platforms are constantly evolving, the mission of connecting with an audience in a meaningful way has remained steadfast. This dedication to compelling storytelling has taken him to some unique places including a massive scientific research facility that listens into deep space, chasing a total solar eclipse, launching a daily talk show with a studio built from spare parts and taking over an art gallery to shoot an artistic film with professional ballet dancers. Currently he works part-time as a visuals producer for CBC while always seeking exciting creative opportunities to dive into.
