About this Event

Love your houseplant, but looking to master new scientific techniques and methods to become a more informed plant owner? Looking to beef up your green thumb with some molecular biology? Look no further than ChiTownBio's brand new course on plant tissue culture! You may have heard of plant tissue culture or may not have, and we are committed to making sure everyone is able to understand and participate. Plant tissue culture is a combination of techniques and skills that can be used to grow and maintain plant tissues and cultures in a sterile environment so that you can more readily multiply, propigate, mutate, and engineer your plants. In this Plants 101 course, we're going to be teaching the very basics of plant tissue culture including the basics of sterile culture and aeseptic technique, how to introduce a plant into tissue culture, how to use synthetic growth regulators to induce multiplication, and how divide multiplying plants to expand your collection. This course is meant to be the first in a series teaching you how to go from one plant to many through multiplication, rooting, acclimation, callus induction, and mutation.

You don't need to bring anything to the class other than a desire to learn. We'll provide everyone with some cuttings to take into culture and potentially some plants in sterile culture to take home.

Courses at ChiTownBio are open to everyone, and we believe that working in a biotechnology future should be accessible to all Chicagoans, regardless of race, gender expression, sexual identity, national origin, or any other protected class. Our lab is a space for open and friendly sharing of ideas, and we are all responsible for ensuring everyone feels safe and respected. We are committed to hosting inclusive events, and will not tolerate any actions or attitudes contrary to our deeply held beliefs in inclusivity. By attending this event, you are agreeing to uphold this standard and acknowledge that the organizers reserve the right to restrict attendance.

If you have any concerns about another person's behavior, you may file a report via email with our organization's president Andy Scarpelli ([email protected] ). ChiTownBio is a safe space for all, and we will take precautionary measures or responsive actions to uphold these ideals.
