Focus on Jazz Piano at The Ellington will showcase Perth’s best jazz pianists as part of the Perth International Jazz Festival. Focus on Jazz Piano at The Ellington is dedicated to the memory of the late Graham Wood, founder of The Ellington and Perth International Jazz Festival.
Tonight’s show features Bob Tweedie, Josiah Padmanabham, Austin Salisbury, and Harry Mitchell.
BOB TWEEDIE
Bob Tweedie is an up-and-coming jazz pianist completing his 4th year of Jazz Honours at WAAPA. Absolutely obsessed with a variety of music, he draws influence from artists such as Tigran Hamasyan, Brad Mehldau, Bill Evans and Ari Hoenig. During this performance, Bob will seek to push the boundaries of modern music-making, and perform his music with honesty and integrity.
JOSIAH PADMANABHAM
Josiah Padmanabham loves to play music in Boorloo (Perth). His main efforts are in Grievous Bodily Calm, Gazey and Bad Whip. In 2020, Josiah won WAM best keyboardist of the year, and has performed for Meg Mac and Katy Steele. Josiah also plays guitar, and loves to have an occasional sing.
AUSTIN SALISBURY
Austin Salisbury is a Perth-based jazz pianist, performing locally and nationally for the last 8 years. Graduating with First-Class Honours in Jazz Performance from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2017, he has learned his craft from some Australia’s finest jazz musicians including Tom O’Halloran, Jamie Oehlers, Russel Holmes and Glyn MacDonald. He has toured nationally with Kate Pass’ acclaimed Persian-Jazz ensemble Kohesia and performed in the Perth, Sydney and Melbourne International Jazz Festivals with various groups. Actively involved in the Perth original jazz scene, he leads the Austin Salisbury Trio as well as original jazz quintet MELVE and the Afro-Cuban inspired jazz project Mejadra, alongside percussionist Imogen Thomson. Most recently, Austin was selected as the pianist in the Australian National Youth Jazz Orchestra, an ensemble under the artistic direction of David Theake and Mace Francis, performing with renowned saxophonist Will Vinson at the 2021 Sydney Con Jazz Festival.
HARRY MITCHELL
Harry Mitchell has been playing piano since the age of 8 and playing jazz since the age of 13. Since then, he has performed with artists like Vincent Gardner, Kate Ceberano, George Garzone, Vince Jones, Troy Roberts, Jerome Jennings, Veronica Swift, Charlie Watts (The Rollingstones), Katy Steele, and many more. He has played on numerous recordings including the Hank Marvin (The Shadows) record Without A Word, the recent Jamie Oehlers record Night Music, and the Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian band record, entitled Spark. In 2017 he was awarded Young Australian Jazz Musician of the year at the AUS Bell awards, as well as being awarded 2017, 2018, 2020 WAM Jazz song of the year, and 2017/18, 2018/19 WAM best Pianist. Harry has released three albums with his standards band TrioTrio and 4 albums of his original quartet/quintet music, as well as his recent album I Am Like the Rain on ABC music.
