It's melodic and harmonic. It's percussive and smooth. It's old as hell, and sometimes, it's just furniture. We're talking about one of the most versatile instruments out there, the piano. Hosted by composer Sharon Udoh, a pianist of 40 years, the series "A Pianist and a Partner Perhaps" highlights 3 or 4 genre-spanning musicians for whom the piano has been a long-time love. Each pianist can choose to bring one additional musician in a duo offering, if they wish (thus, "a partner perhaps"), or, they can go at it solo. Piano players, lovers, and nerds everywhere, come join us as we celebrate this magnificent instrument!
At this second edition of PPP we have Justin Dillard w/ Anisha Rush, Anaiet Soul, Julian Davis Reid w/ Tramaine Parker, Angelo Hart, and hosted by the one and only Sharon Udoh. Sharon will perform a short set with experimental turntablist Allen Moore to open the night!

Anaiet (she/they) is a 25 year old composer, pianist, guitarist, and vocalist from the South Side of Chicago. A staple in Chicago's music scene, their sound is a culmination of the music they've grown up listening to and learning to play in the city: free and fusion Jazz, Soul, Gospel, RnB and Pop.
Born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO, saxophonist, composer, and educator Anisha Rush began playing the saxophone at the age of 10 and went on to study music and psychology, earning a BM in Jazz Studies from the Thompson Jazz Studies Program and a BA in Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
As a performer, Anisha's noteworthy collaborations include performances alongside luminaries such as Makaya McCraven, Ron Miles, Matt Wilson, Dawn Clement, Greg Gisbert, Shane Endsley, Art Lande, and others. Anisha has performed at several festivals including Bonnaroo, DC Jazz Festival, Winter Jazz Fest, Telluride Jazz Festival, and Five Points Jazz Festival.
Anisha actively performs as bandleader of 'Anisha Rush and the Encounter', a dynamic ensemble that transcends boundaries and captivates audiences with its unique fusion of genres while still utilizing the improvisational traditions of jazz. The band refuses to be put in a box, and will often play music reminiscent of not only jazz but also soul, R&B, and gospel.
In 2023, Anisha was selected for the Next Jazz Legacy, an apprenticeship program led by New Music USA and the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Additionally, Anisha Rush and the Encounter is a recipient of a 2024 grant from Chamber Music America's Performance Plus program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Foundation.
Description: Two perspectives of a triumph(in 3 movements. 1. Adagio in Wail. 2. Alnegro. 3. Space.).
Julian Davis Reid is an accomplished pianist and composer of Chicago who will be presenting some original music from his recent and upcoming jazz and gospel releases. He will be joined by the vocalist Tramaine Parker for several of his selections. Julian's music is pastoral, hopeful, and introspective.
Sharon Udoh is a Nigerian-American pianist, composer, arranger, curator, and vocalist based in Chicago. Her work combines vocals that seemingly erupt from the center of the earth with a stage presence that somehow feels both dangerous and kind. Her collaborators have included clipping., Tune-Yards, Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus, Ben Lamar Gay, Dr. Adam Zanolini, and Angel Bat Dawid, and on this particular night, Allen Moore. Her performances have been described as a warm bowl of soup, a tornado, a jalapeƱo pepper, a Jackson Pollock painting, a bulldozer, and magnetic. Find out more at counterfeitmadison.com.
