About this Event
Saxophone virtuoso Phil Bancroft is making waves with a series of acclaimed releases on his label- myriadstreams.com.
One features his new band, The Beautiful Storm, with Indian Tabla demon
Gyan Singh and Scottish Guitar alchemist Graeme Stephen playing an intoxicating new music with shimmering compositions explored by master improvisers.
Instilled with a deep understanding of Jazz, Celtic, and Indian Music, equal joy is taken in groove and flow, the interplay of cycle and metre, the intrigue of melody and the spice of chromaticism woven into spell-binding musical journeys of rare beauty. After two highly successful tours in 2025, with headline shows at the Cockpit Theatre London and the Novus Festival, this first gig at The Jazz Bar follows their concert at this year’s Celtic Connections.
Reviews
“With a steely clarity and sense of inner peace there is an ever-shifting breeze of melodic cycles, and the interplay is completely hypnotic. Stephens briefly recalls early Velvet Underground, atonal intro segues into avant-funk, while the elegiac ‘Hungry Star’ fuses elements of Celtic music and Americana. Wonderful!” UK Jazz News
‘It’s jazz, Jim, but not as we know it!’ The ILEACH
‘An arrestingly beautiful set from Phil Bancroft’s Beautiful Storm...”
Scottish Jazz Space
"The use of chromaticism, fixed tonalities and odd and varying metres, as well as some heavier rock sensibilities, gives the set a mesmeric, sometimes trippy feel, an endless continuity of sound that beguiles and entertains.” Jazz Journal
“Still reeling after last week’s incredible gig by Phil Bancroft’s Beautiful Storm.” Jazz At The Glad
'I have fallen in love with this album so much we booked them to play at the
Cockpit Theatre, London later this year…’ Jez Nelson Jazz FM
“An Internationally-renowned saxophonist who never rests on his laurels, bringing vitality to what was familiar, making accessible the challenging and free.” Jazzwise
