Peña Flamenca la Maria

Join us for lively, improvisational flamenco at Santa Barbara Historical Museum as part of our Flamenco! Santa Barbara music education program. This is not a traditional show, but it is a lot of fun! Dancers, flamenco enthusiasts and anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of the art form will enjoy this casual event (with vino!).

Artists leading this experience:

Flamenco! Santa Barbara Artistic Director María Bermúdez is a world-renowned artist. She has exposed audiences across the world to the unique style and sound of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. In 2021 she was named Ambassador of Flamenco.

Pepele Méndez was born in Jerez de La Frontera, Spain into the legendary Méndez clan, a dynasty of singers from La Plazuela. At the age of 16, he began he debuted at the Tokyo National Theater to great acclaim and has toured the world for the last two decades.

José Tanaka has toured extensively across the United States, Europe, and Japan, performing at venues such as the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Olympia in Paris, the Acropolis in Athens. Tanaka is a guitarist and composer born in Kyoto, Japan, to a family deeply rooted in the flamenco arts.
