Perspectives on ‘social value’ in the contemporary service economy

In this seminar we seek to explore different perspectives on the social impact of economic activity and employment beyond orthodox measures of profit and loss. While conventions such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) are well established in the corporate realm as marketing tools and investing principles respectively, they have been subject to considerable critical scrutiny; CSR has been found particularly wanting as an indictor of virtue.

With social value, we seek to strip back the corporate apparatus and move towards a clearer understanding of how service sector enterprises might exhibit both sustainable business models and produce tangible social externalities for the communities they impact upon. We welcome speakers
